Taxi to the Dark Side is the Oscar award winning documentary by Alex Gibney, in which we learn the story of Dilawar, a young Afghani cab driver, mistakenly identified as a terrorist and taken to Bagram Prison where he was tortured and murdered by US soldiers. A coroner observed that his legs had been beaten so badly that had he survived, he would have needed to have them amputated.
Sadly, Dilawar’s story is not unique. This film provides a close look at the torture methods used by the United States Government at the Abu Ghraib, Bagram and Guantanamo Bay Prisons, as well as offering personal interviews with the soldiers in question.
It should be noted that this film is graphic, and not for the fainthearted, however this is a life changing film, and one that every person should see. Whether you believe in the use of torture or not, Taxi to the Dark Side is important, as it shows exactly where the order for this cruelty begins – and it is not with the soldiers who perform it.
The Sydney Film Festival is showing from June 4 – June 22, 2008.
