Byron Bay band, Very Unique Existence’s latest EP, Everyone, is sure to turn some heads with its atypical style and memorable beat. The band performs what they call ‘positive consciousness rock’, rock music with an optimistic encouraging twist.

Some of the songs do have a rather ‘simple’ edge, with lyrics like “Take it easy on yourself/It’s better for your health”, however they are catchy and will most likely be trapped in your head for days. The UK Dance Remix of Take It Easy is an attractive tune, and could be very popular in a dance/nightclub setting.

After six songs, the EP has a track called ‘Seven Minutes of Silence’, which is exactly what it says it is, before playing Starlight (personal favourite), which appeared on their previous EP The V.U.E. The ‘Seven Minutes of Silence’ did originally confuse me, although it adds a distinctive slant to the overall CD.

While the EP doesn’t give the band a real ‘stand out’ edge, they certainly have something. ‘Positive Consciousness Rock’ could very well be a new trend.

The EP comes with a bonus DVD, which features five live sets (Roll On, Wonder Why, Apathy, Manifest and Shadow Behind), the Looking Down video clip and a short documentary which allows you to get a better feel for the band, and the vibe that they are trying to create.

The record really does sound like they went nine out of ten steps of the way, and just didn’t quite make it to outstanding. It’s hearing something that isn’t quite great, but could be. Saying that, it is worth the $14.95.
